Most of the people photographed are not professional models, but ‘ordinary’ people who sign a model release contract. A model release contract is a form on which the subject agrees that he/she is aware that his/her photo may be used for publicity. The subject agrees to this use by signing the form. To make the person in the picture profit from the sales, details, such as bank account number (when available) and/or address and/or phone number have to be noted on the contract. Download here an (English) version of a Model Release.
We can only fulfil the promise of World Portraits once we have sufficient information of the person in the photo. If a model does not have a bank account there are plenty of alternative payment options. We can make use for example of mobile money payments. This payment method is available in many countries and allows users to receive money using their mobile phone. It is a very popular alternative to bank accounts. Another possibility to pay the models is to make use of money transfer services like Western Union. They offer the possibility of cash pick up and have agencies and desks worldwide.
The distribution key that we apply to sales is: 40% for the photographer, 40% for World Portraits and 20% for the portrayed. In the eventual case, a person is not traceable anymore the profit will go to a project in the country of origin of the person portrayed.
